The Malassezia-Safe Ingredient Guide: What Your Moisturizer Should (and Shouldn't) Contain
Seborrheic dermatitis isn't caused by dryness — it's caused by Malassezia yeast overgrowth. Most moisturizers make it worse. Here's how to read a label and find formulas that actually help.
Seborrheic dermatitis affects roughly 5% of the population — and an estimated 11% of people with self-reported sensitive skin have SD as a contributing diagnosis. If you've been told to "moisturize more" by a pharmacist or found that certain skincare products reliably trigger a flare, this guide is for you.
The key insight: SD is not a dryness problem. It's a fungal imbalance problem. Malassezia yeast is a normal resident of human skin — it becomes problematic when the skin barrier is disrupted and certain lipids (fatty acids, specifically those in the C11–C24 chain range) become available as a food source. Many conventional moisturizers are, effectively, Malassezia food.
What Malassezia Feeds On
Malassezia is a lipid-dependent yeast. It cannot synthesize its own fatty acids and must obtain them from the skin's surface. The research identifies the following as problematic in topical formulas for SD-prone skin:
Avoid: - Fatty acids C11–C24 (includes myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic acids when applied topically as free fatty acids) - Polysorbate-20 and Polysorbate-80 (emulsifiers that hydrolyze to fatty acids on the skin) - Many plant oils: olive oil, sunflower oil, flaxseed oil, coconut oil (especially lauric acid) - Shea butter (rich in oleic acid) - Most conventional emollient esters (isopropyl myristate, for example)
Safe: - Squalane (from sugarcane or olives — the squalane fraction itself, not squalene or full olive oil) - Glycerin (humectant, not a lipid) - Sodium hyaluronate (molecular humectant) - Dimethicone (silicone-based occlusive, no fatty acid component) - Cetearyl Alcohol (a fatty alcohol, not a fatty acid — different molecular structure; generally Malassezia-safe) - Zinc oxide (UV filter, no lipid involvement)
How to Read a Label
- Look for oils in the top half of the INCI list. Ingredients are listed in descending concentration order. An oil in position 2 or 3 is a primary ingredient. The same oil in position 18 may be negligible — though "negligible" is debatable for reactive skin.
- Polysorbates are hidden fatty acid delivery systems. Polysorbate-80 is one of the most common moisturizer emulsifiers and one of the most commonly cited contributors to Malassezia flares. It's found in many "sensitive skin" products including some dermatologist-recommended lines.
- "Fragrance-free" and "Malassezia-safe" are not the same. A fragrance-free product can still contain oleic-acid-rich plant oils. Check both.
What Derrin's Moisturizer Does Differently

If you haven't had a diagnosis and suspect SD based on symptoms (flaking, redness, and scaling concentrated on the scalp, sides of the nose, eyebrows, or ears), a single visit is worth it — both to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out psoriasis, which has overlapping symptoms and different treatment logic.
